Thursday 9 September, 9.30am-6.00pm
Day Visit to Jane Austen’s House and Winchester. We leave opposite the Community Centre in St George’s Road, Wimbledon at 9.30am and go straight to Winchester. King Alfred the Great made Winchester the capital of Saxon England in the 9th century. A magnificent Norman cathedral dominates the city, which today is an agricultural market centre. The surrounding streets contain fine buildings from every period since the early 12th century.
After lunch in Winchester we go to Jane Austen’s House, a 17th century house where she wrote or revised her six great novels. The house contains many items associated with Jane and her family: recreated kitchen, pleasant garden, bakehouse with brick oven and wash tub and Jane’s donkey carriage. We will have tea opposite the house (not included in the price). Return to Wimbledon by 6.00pm depending on traffic. The cost is £25.00, which includes entry fees to Jane Austen’s House, gratuities and coach.
