Science, Technology & Society Network Seminar
THE ANNUAL SEMINAR AT ABERGAVENNY
Monday 9th to Thursday 12th August 2010

Booking Form

The Seminar is Open to all U3A Members

The seminar format is a mixture of talks, visits and socialising. Talks are illustrated and while given by experts or enthusiasts are at a general interest level rather than a specialist presentation. So far we have speakers on large aircraft, cholesterol, energy, the Golden Mean, starlight and DNA. The main visit will probably be to the Waterfront in Swansea where there is a Maritime Museum and other attractions. There will also be a more local visit to a place of interest. We will publish the full programme in May or June.

The Seminar is held at the Ty'r Morwydd Environmental Study Centre, Abergavenny. They have a good website at www.mulberrycentre.com.The programme starts at 2.00pm on Monday 9th and finishes after a buffet lunch on Thursday 12th August. The half board cost is £190 per person in either single or double rooms including all visits. There will be a limited number of places for day visitors at £90 including all meals and visits

Location and Accommodation
Abergavenny is a historic market town in Monmouthshire. Ty’r Morwydd Environmental Centre is a good quality hostel rather than a hotel and has 30 single and 22 twin bedrooms on two floors. There is no lift. All rooms have washbasins but they are not en-suite. There is a well-equipped shower and toilet room near the bedrooms on the first floor (female) and second floor (male) and an additional unisex toilet on each floor. There are also toilets on the ground floor.
Beds are made up with duvets and rooms are serviced daily but you will need to bring your own towels and soap.
The dining and seminar rooms are on the ground floor. Please note that most of the single rooms are on the second floor (male shower room). Those who have particular problems with stairs should state this and ask for a first floor room but it cannot be guaranteed.

Food
The meals are very good and generously proportioned and mostly ‘help yourself to as much as you want’. Our first meal will be an evening meal on Monday 9th. Thereafter the price includes cooked breakfast, evening meal, coffee/tea, and biscuits for the breaks when we are working at the Centre. There will also be a buffet lunch before we depart on Thursday.
There are quality vegetarian alternatives at each meal. This alternative is only available for those who have asked for this in advance at the time of booking. It is important to advise us if you have special dietary requirements.
Ty’r Morwydd is not licensed but we will be providing wine and soft drinks for members socialising in the evening. This is included in the price. The informal evening socialising has proved to be an enjoyable and popular part of the seminar.

Sunday 8th August

We have arranged for rooms to be available from Sunday night 8th August at an additional cost of £25 including an excellent breakfast. We go out to a local pub for a meal on Sunday night. Monday morning is free to socialise or visit Abergavenny
To get there: Abergavenny is well served by trains; London and Manchester are around 2.5 hours. Driving is not complicated: up via M4 and Newport, or down on the M5/ M50 Ross Spur, then the A40. Full directions to the centre will follow.
We hope you decide to join us. We will have another memorable 4 days. We expect to have a reasonable demand for places and applications will be dealt with on a first come first served basis.
Send a deposit to secure your place, with the application form.
Organised by members of the U3A Science, Technology and Society Network:
Jo Livingston and Nic Griffin, our web address is u3aabergavenny2010@hotmail.co.uk

Please address all enquiries to the organisers, Jo or Nic.
Nic is dealing with the bookings and visits and Jo is arranging the speakers, but general questions about the seminar can be addressed to either of us. Bear with us if we are not at home, leave a message and we will reply ASAP.
The Third Age Trust, the Ty’r Morwydd Centre, and the Abergavenny U3A are all supportive of the Seminar but unable to answer queries.
