What can we do to increase our chances of having healthy, busy brains into old age?
What is the evidence for the ‘use it or lose it’ hypothesis?
Senior citizens are the future of society. How can we continue to make important contributions?

Speakers:

Felicia A Huppert – Professor of Psychology and Director of Cambridge Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Ageing.

Tom Kirkwood – Professor of Medicine, Head of the University of Newcastle’s Department of Gerontology and giver of The End of Age 2001 Reith Lectures.

Professors Huppert and Kirkwood are both major contributors to The Foresight Report 2008 into Mental Capital and Wellbeing.

Colin Blakemore – Professor of Neuroscience at University of Oxford and University of Warwick. Chairman of the Neuroscience Research Partnership in Singapore.

Moderator:

Vivienne Parry - writer and broadcaster, with a weekly column in The Times Body & Soul section. Presenter of Radio 4 programmes Inside the Ethics Committee and Am I Normal? She is a scientist by training.

The meeting takes place in the Wellcome Trust Lecture Hall at the Royal Society and interval refreshments will be served in the City of London Rooms.

Admission is by ticket only at £11.50 per person including refreshments

The Royal Society is located at 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG, just off Waterloo Place, between Pall Mall and The Mall. It is five minutes walk to Piccadilly Circus underground station and ten minutes to Charing Cross mainline and underground stations, or 20 minutes through St James's Park to Victoria. Trafalgar Square, and all bus services through it, is also very close.

U3A EXPLORES SCIENCE AT THE Ri

Advance information

Each year the Royal Institution and the U3A team up to produce an afternoon of the best speakers from the Ri’s programme. On 31st March 2009 this event will return to the recently refurbished Royal Institution building in Mayfair with another line up of fascinating science.

Speakers

Dr Tamsin Mather, from Oxford University, will be speaking about her research on volcanic hotspots and the environmental impacts of their emissions.

Professor Chris Mason, a leading expert on medicine at UCL, will speak on Regenerative Medicine and the challenge of translating stem cell science into routine clinical practice.

Professor Ian Walmsley, a researcher into laser physics who will talk on quantum optics and his work with the Ultrafast group at Oxford University.

Places are limited. Admission is by ticket only at £15 each including refreshments.
Applications can be received immediately and
tickets, programmes and maps will be sent out from January onwards.

The study days are held in the Menuhin Hall, Stoke d’Abernon, near Leatherhead. This is a large venue and places are usually available. Study days start at 9.30am with registration and finish at 4pm. The cost including coffee/tea and biscuits will be £10, with attendees bringing a packed lunch.
Booking is necessary. There is a handout with full details including a booking slip and a map for each event, available at our monthly meetings, from Stewart Kingaby 8286 7658 or downloadable here.

Many people drive to this venue, and car sharing can be advertised in the Newsletter. Alternatively train to Cobham/Stoke d’Abernon and then a 10 minute taxi ride. There are taxis at the station. It can be useful to share the cost of the taxi.
