MONTHLY MEETINGS Fridays at 2.00 pm.
These are held in central Wimbledon and there is usually a talk.
The Talks are at 2.00 pm in the large hall at Drake House, St George’s Road. The admission charge is £1.
Visitors who might think of joining the U3A are welcome.
At our monthly meeting we make time for announcements about events of interest to members. The announcements are kept short, but attending the meetings can be a useful way of keeping in touch. Also U3A information and application forms for U3A events are made available.
2008 FRIDAY TALKS
November 14 Keith Weston on A Butcher’s Life for Me.
Keith will cover the changes in his trade over the last 32 years: how he overcame the challenges from the introduction of metrication, the various regulations in the U.K. and from the E.U.; the changes in people’s shopping and eating habits; the outbreaks of BSC and Foot and Mouth; the opening up of local supermarkets etc.
January 16 Martin Ireland on Light on the Water - William Turner’s approach to Landscape and River Scenes
Mr. Ireland is a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He teaches and demonstrates drawing and painting techniques. Observers will gain a better knowledge of how Turner used watercolours, including brushes, sponges and paper supports.
This replaces the talk that Mr. Ireland was booked to deliver to Merton U3A last May as he could not return in time after his art exhibition abroad. Many members have expressed their disappointment at the missed opportunity.

This will be an illustrated talk on costumes for men and women during the period. The talk is a reflection on the social history in Britain, by focussing on costumes, hats and hat pins.
